This essay aims to explore cultural representations
and iconographical tradition of Montello and its karst phenomena.
Prose and poetic works, historical maps and photographs, postcards,
affiches and illustrated guides are here examined as landscape
texts, within their cultural contexts, in order to understand
how the image of Montello has been perceived, interpreted, and
even celebrated in past and recent times. "Gran Selva" in the
age of the Republic of Venice, patriotic icon during the First
World War, source of literary inspiration and memory, attractive
naturalistic site that needs protection, Montello has preserved
till now a strongly vivid both visual and cultural image. |
